“My Mom is 96 years old, which is far longer than most get with their parents. If she lives to be 100, then I’ve got 4 more Christmases with her. That means this Christmas might be the last one I’ll have with her. Just one more. . .
Enjoy your family this Christmas. It all goes so quick. And you never know how many more times you’ll have.”
This recent post from a colleague struck a chord with me. On one level, it might seem a bit somber for such a festive season. But on another level, it is spot on.
We have no guarantees in life. Okay, the adage of “death and taxes” might be a guarantee, but not a pleasant one. However, the fact that we have no guarantees makes it very clear that it is vitally important how we spend the time we have. As my colleague, so powerfully expressed, spending time with family is vitally important – especially at Christmas.
Time is the Best Christmas Gift
When we think about Christmas, we think of many things – gifts, setting up a tree, laughter, and fun. Hopefully, thinking about Christmas this year will also cause us to remember my colleague’s thoughts about his mother and consider . . .
- Are there family members I could (or should) be spending time with?
- Are there things unsaid that need to be said?
- Are there relationships that need mending?
Christmas is still one of my favorite times of the year. I really enjoy giving gifts! This year though, maybe the gift I (and others) need to give is not something that can be bought. Maybe this year, the gifts we need to give are simply time, conversation, and interest in those we care about.
