Fierce Conversations – Part Three

Putting Fierce into Practice

In Parts One and Two of this series, we explored Susan Scott’s definition of “fierce” and the seven principles that empower authentic, effective communication. Now, it’s time to take those principles off the page and put them into practice in real-world conversations.

Think about the roadblocks in your business—the elephant in the room no one wants to address, the decision that feels too uncomfortable to make. These are the moments where a fierce conversation can change everything. Scott’s framework gives us the tools to tackle these challenges head-on.

Fierce Conversations by Susan Scott, Part One

Decide to Be Fierce

Identifying the conversation that needs to happen—and committing to have that conversation—is half the battle. This isn’t easy, but as Susan Scott reminds us: the conversation is the relationship. When we choose authenticity over avoidance, courage over comfort, and connection over convenience, we unlock potential—in ourselves, our teams, and our organizations.

Intentionally Prepare

Don’t just “wing it.” Preparation matters, especially if you’re new to this practice. Before you start:

  • Clarify your goal—and what’s at risk if you keep avoiding the issue.
  • Check distractions and ego at the door.
  • Listen and engage authentically.

Progress Takes Practice

If you’ve been avoiding tough conversations, expect to feel uncomfortable at first. That’s normal. Like any skill, it takes conditioning. Start small: focus on one principle at a time. A simple first step? Practice being fully present. Step away from your computer, silence notifications, and give the person in front of you your undivided attention.

Closing the Loop

Fierce conversations aren’t about being aggressive—they’re about being real. They require courage, clarity, and commitment. When you embrace this approach, you create space for progress, stronger relationships, and better outcomes.

So, what conversation have you been avoiding? And what could change if you decided to make it fierce?

Testimonials

From Our Valued Customers.

We enjoy working with Westlark Advisors. Great people who have helped our business!

Will

Westlark Advisors has taken the burden of the everyday supply logistics off our plate and allowed us to focus on our operations in the critical times of the year. They have educated our team along the way and helped us brainstorm options/risks that fit our business model. Westlark Advisors has allowed the Tevis organization to explore opportunities within the supply and hedging arena that we would not have been exposed to without the relationship.

Dave

We experience less angst when making a futures purchase.*

Jeff

They not only taught us how to plan and diversify our supply, but also new ways to protect the price. They have been great at negotiating supply deals and putting plans in place to know we will be secure when the market is not. I am confident that if things get tight we will be in a better position than our competitors.

Troy

We can’t say enough about the high level of service the entire team provided us. We relied on them and they came through for us over and over. They are complete professionals and a pleasure to do business with.

Rick & Ann

It has been one of the best decisions that our company has ever made. The Westlark Advisors team have looked after our interests since day one, and have executed the plan each year very well.
