Themes from the Japan LPG Seminar & the WLGA Innovation Summit

Presentations at the Japan LPG Seminar and the WLGA Innovation Summit echoed the same three themes.

  1. Global LPG production will continue to grow.
  2. The U.S. will be the global leader for LPG production.
  3. Asia and Africa will drive the demand side of LPG growth.

Supporting Data from the Seminar/Summit

In their keynote address at the Japan LPG Seminar last week, Poten & Poten Partners (P&P) provided data to expand on the theme of increasing LPG production.  In fact, the first slide of their presentation featured the title: “LPG Supply Surges.”

This title described U.S. production growth with a projection of NGL production surpassing 140 million metric tons by 2030. In contrast, P&P stated that Middle Eastern Seaborne LPG supply could reach over 60 million metric tons in the same time frame.

While those two points clearly show a burgeoning amount of LPG, they also help emphasize the growing, and continued dominance of the U.S. LPG markets on the global stage. Besides the overall growth of NGL production, U.S. dominance was also expressed in the way U.S. prices are starting to reshape international markets. Japan, primarily supplied by the Middle East just 15 years ago, demonstrated the strength of U.S. supply by stating that 65% of the nation’s LPG needs are now met from U.S. production.

Japanese per-capita consumption of LPG is the highest in Asia and highlights a growing trend.  Other Asian countries, like India and Bangladesh have also seen significant increases in LPG demand in recent years.  In fact, India has managed to grow domestic consumption by massive amounts over the last 10-15 years while Bangladesh has seen double digit growth rates over the last decade.  These strong consumption trends are a contrast to the stable demand in North America and the massive growth potential that waits in Africa.

Watch for these Trends

The themes mentioned above invite the broader propane/LPG industry to watch for the following trends:

  1. U.S. and Canadian export infrastructure needing to expand in the coming 5 to 10 years. As production booms, the only outlet for U.S. propane remains international markets.  The only factor limiting how much U.S. LPG can be consumed (at the present time) is the capacity to load it onto a vessel.
  2. U.S. price hub becoming more intertwined with global markets.  It is unlikely that Saudi CP or the FEI (Far East Index) goes away, but Mont Belvieu could possibly become the driving pricing mechanism for a larger portion of the globe.
  3. New ways to utilize LPG as some other form of feedstock.  SK Gas has already shown that LPG can be used as a feedstock for high quantity electricity generation.  Other nations are also recognizing that LPG can be a far cleaner fuel than traditional diesel or fuel oil.  New uses will continue to be integrated as LPG production keeps growing.

These trends show an industry that clearly has more growth potential around the globe and implies a need for anyone using LPG to also be aware of what global shifts can move both propane supply and pricing on a daily basis.

The Westlark Team was pleased to be a part of both the Japan LPG Seminar and the WLGA Innovation Summit.  If you would like to hear more about the themes and trends discussed at these events – give us a call. We’d love to talk with you!

These events provided the LPG/propane industry with information to help watch for and get ahead of coming trends.
